"Destiny of Champions"

by Jerry Sauls

Original Oil on Stretched Canvas - 24" x 48"

The single play that propelled the team to that most coveted achievement; the NCAA National Championship.  That moment captured forever in amazing detail and color by Jerry Sauls (six months to complete). Make it a part of your permanent Gator collection.

Arguably the biggest play in the history of Florida Gator Football, although a superb demonstration of athletic effort, most certainly could be characterized as fate or destiny.  Considering the circumstances surrounding the play and the ultimate importance of the victory,  almighty  intervention seemed likely.

On a warm early November 2006 evening in Gainesville, Florida, Coach Steve Spurrier on his first trip back to "The Swamp" with his South Carolina Gamecocks, had led his team to an impressive performance against Urban Meyer's mighty Gators.  With only eight seconds remaining, all that Coach Spurrier and the Gamecocks needed was for Ryan Succop (among the best kickers in the Southeastern Conference) to make a 48-yard field goal for the big upset victory (first ever in "The Swamp") over the highly ranked and heavily favored Gators. Timeout was called.  The Gator Defensive Coordinator call for a designed block which overloaded the left side of the defense and had key defenders crashing the middle of the offensive line to get enough push to allow a third defender to leap into the air and block the kick.

The ball was snapped. Ray McDonald and Steven Harris plowed into the offensive line.  The snap, hold and kick looked perfect.  Then, as if shot from some type of launching device, Jarvis Moss, towering above the line of scrimmage, knocked the ball down with his big left hand and the play and victory that would set the stage for the 2006 Florida Gator Football team to move on to an SEC and NCAA National Championship was complete.

Gator football history was made on that night. For those that witnessed, a moment that will never be forgotten.
