This painting presents an event where members of a close family, representing three generations, make an all too familiar trip to town for a wagonload of supplies to keep the farm functioning for the next trek..

"Arched Walkway"

28" x 22" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

The stunning view of the desert southwest with its contrasting vivid colors make the long and difficult walk up the gravel and brick stairway to the Villa more than worth the effort.

"America's Past 1941"

24" x 30" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Journey back to a simpler time and place in small town America characterized by close families and friendly neighbors soon to experience dramatic changes resulting from the historic attack at Pearl Harbor.

"Crystal Creek"

20" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

'Crystal Creek' reminds me of many natural scenes that I have experienced and enjoyed in my travels.  The short-lived bright colors of early spring and the brilliant reflections of the mid-morning sun are the highlights of this work of art.

"The Ultimate Sunset"

24" x 48" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

A combination of a brilliant western sun, majestic clouds and aggressive surf present a radical and surreal image resulting in the transformation into a world of fantasy.

"A Walk In The Park"

20" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

"A Walk in the Park" is a tribute to the leaders of the great cities in the United States and around the world who, many years ago, had the foresight and consideration to preserve the beauty of nature and all it's splendor in the heart of their metropolitan areas.  My painting is a typical scene from one of these nature parks that I have had the pleasure to enjoy.

"Carolina Falls"

28" x 22" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

The continuous flow of cool, clear water winds through the colorful formation of rocks feeding the mountain stream that serves as a source of pleasure for the area residents and a source of life for the wilderness wildlife.

"Jungle Cat"

18" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

'Jungle Cat' catches a large Jaguar perched on a tree limb and ready for action.  The atmosphere in the jungle is a bit eerie with the rays of sunlight trying to find their way through the thick vegetation.

"Out of the West"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Imagine it is late in the day and you are inside your cottage at your weekend retreat leisurely preparing a bite to eat.  Gradually you notice that the atmosphere in the cottage is changing.  You have seen this many times and know that it can only mean one thing; a special event that cannot be ignored.  You stop everything, fix your favorite beverage and head out to the back porch to sit back and enjoy another edition of the always-unique setting sun in the western sky as in lowers below the horizon of the marshland.

"Colors of Spring"

24" x 30" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

The earliest signs of spring are when the buds on the plant life seem to magically appear, almost overnight.  After a few days, the blooms begin to open and we are treated to an explosion of new color made more dramatic by the dull, lifeless landscape from months of winter. We appreciate the performance for soon the colorful seasonal flowers are gone and the bright green trees leaves lose their luster.

"Island Palms"

36" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

'Island Palms' was contrived from a selection of photographs that I shot while on a trip to the Island of Barbados.  The Island has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and the vivid, pastel colors that you see in the artwork are not exaggerated.

"Slow Southern Sky"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

A place in history where times could be hard but life's simple pleasures were appreciated.

"Black River Bend"

20" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

'Black River Bend' shown early in the fall season with the leaves well into their brilliant color changes and producing dramatic reflections on the glass-like surface of the river.

"Running Wild and Free"

24" x 48" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

The soft green valley surrounded by the sculptured red rocks of the southwest are the backdrop for this herd of wild horses as they boldly charge around the cliffs and through the canyons to another favorite spot to graze and rest for the night.

"Familiar Trail"

20" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

'Familiar Trail' is a rendition of a serene yet common sight in the Southeastern United States.  It's early morning, a bit misty and has probably rained the night before.  Although pleasant to the human eye, this scene, most often, is enjoyed only through the eyes of  the wildlife that live in this forest.

"South Pacific"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

'South Pacific' finds a special island paradise with the sun slowly disappearing from the scene transforming the ambience with soft beautiful tones.  You feel as if you could walk along the beach for miles and with each few steps the scene will change.

"Colorado Memory"

24" x 30" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

'Colorado Memory' really is a memory of a view that I enjoyed while on a snowmobile tour near the Continental Divide.  I didn't have time to take a photo, but I was so impressed that the vision remained in my mind.

"Beckoning Mist"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

'Beckoning Mist' is something from my imagination.  With the contrasting cool colors, detail in the foreground trees and water and the misty background, you can just sense that there is a natural spring nearby feeding the stream as it moves through the woods.

"Pacific Coast"

20" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Journey along the Pacific Coast Highway at precisely the right moment and catch the last of the fading sun glistening on the surface of the rough and radiant waves on their way to crashing against the rocky coastal shoreline.

"Sunburst"

28" x 22" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Welcome to the world of fantasy where the brilliant rays of the morning sun just overwhelm this scenic wilderness setting with unbelievable color and emotion.

"High Winds at the Point"

22" x 28" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

The old light house stands firm against the strong northwest winds that are all too familiar to the long time caretaker and his dog at this secluded spot along the Pacific coast.

"American Bald Eagle"

24" x 20" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

This gallant and proud creature, a symbol of America's freedom, dominates the canvas with his wings spread wide as he approaches his intended perch.

"Moment in Time"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

'Moment in Time' is a study of natural light and color and how it could be presented at a precise moment when all the conditions are perfect.  The ominous ocean swells reflect all the brilliant colors of the sky and magically blend those colors with the natural tones of the deep sea.

"Riverfront Retreat"

30" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

It's early morning.  The usual fog settles on the river until burned away by the warm rays of the rising sun.  A great place to escape the frustrations and aggravations of everyday life.

"Mallard Refuge"

20" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Away from the dangers of civilization, the mallards frolic in the cool lake waters and look forward to the remainder of another peaceful day.

"Double Date"

30" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

A popular spot for this foursome deep in the forest provides a time of comfort and relief from the usual stress of survival in the wild.

"Mountain Pass"

18" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

An unusual assortment of colors as a result of the fading sunlight near the end of day combined with cool, damp atmospheric conditions highlight this painting.

"Solitude of Choice"

18" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Far away from town or even the nearest neighbor.  The isolation is not for most, but for some it is the chosen way to live their lives.

"Northwest Spectacle"

24" x 30" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

In the great Pacific Northwest the crystal clear, cool mountain waters flow through the emerald green forest climaxing into a  grand and spectacular waterfall.

"Rose Garden"

24" x 18" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

'Rose Garden' was inspired by my interest in gardening.  With a limited color scheme, the flowers, illustrated in various stages of development, are detailed and precise with very close attention given to each leaf and petal.

"Country Home"

16" x 20" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

The small family home, on an unpaved road deep in the country, holds many fond memories for those that grew up here.

"Exploring the Farm"

24" x 30" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Thinking about it, I suppose the state of Florida is best known for sunshine, beaches, beautiful women, great college football and of course Disney World and it's companion theme parks.  Nice attractions, but speaking as a professional landscape artist, I find my lifelong home state a bit lacking in subjects for my paintings.  I guess that's why I choose to travel in search of inspiration. However, there are exceptions. This painting is from the grounds of a 2500-acre plantation/farm owned by a close friend located in Madison County in North Florida.

"Sunrise South"

20" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

All of the conditions are right on this particular morning that make the effort required for the experience well worth it.  The morning sun, the atmosphere, the colors of the wilderness foliage and the calm waters combine to present the worthy moment.

"Quail Haven"

24" x 30" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Hidden deep in the wilderness away from man and machines, this natural clearing along with it's water supply and abundant food source, has all the amenities that make it an ideal refuge for all sorts of wildlife, including this flock of Bob White Quail.

"Golden Image"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

While most of my work is from actual places and things that I have experienced,  "Golden Image" is one of only a few that comes 100% from the imagination.  I like working this way because I believe that it is the best measure of artistic creativity.  Starting with only a blank canvas, choice of dominant colors and a general idea of subject matter, the painting evolves as I progress and changes complexion many times before  completion.

"Swampland"

22" x 28" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

A rowboat trek through a southern cypress swampland would probably be an arduous and sometimes frightening experience for most. In addition to the eerie atmosphere as depicted here, one would most assuredly be cognizant of the swamp creatures in the water beneath your boat, lurking in dense growth along the banks and above you in the trees.  Nevertheless, an exciting prospect for the most adventurous among us.

"Along the Rocky Coast"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

The focal point of this painting is the merging of the calm tropical waters with the sculptured rocks and sandy beaches. The changing colors, influenced by water depth, reflections, shadows and the wet sands set the tone for the scene created by the elements of nature.

"Southern Pines"

24" x 20" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

The simple subject matter for this painting was chosen as an exercise in technique for mastering the art of painting pine trees.  With the experience of hundreds of completed landscapes, I still consider capturing pines to be very challenging.

"A Place in the Sun"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

"A Place in the Sun" is a depiction of an experience that one might encounter while exploring the wilderness near where I live in Northern Florida, USA. Most likely a retreat for someone looking to escape the rigors of life if only for a short time. The motivation may be the thrill of the fresh catch for today's dinner or just to pull out a comfortable deck chair and enjoy the ever changing atmosphere or the sounds and scents of nature highlighted by the warm gentle breeze rustling in the pine needles.

"Magic Rays"

28" x 22" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

As a nature artist I have always been intrigued and fascinated by the magic of the setting sun. Although "Magic Rays" is more of a compilation of memories from past experiences, My most vivid recollections come from my visits to the Hawaiian Islands. Not sure why, but I seem to remember reading something about it having to do with the direction of the trade winds, the clouds losing their moisture over the mountains and the clean air over the ocean. Volcanic ash at high altitudes also figures in there somewhere. I think this painting is a good example of how beautiful sunsets can be experienced almost anywhere. Why are sunsets magical for me? You never know what to expect; each is unique and exciting. For about thirty minutes you are treated to a show of light, shapes and colors that increases in intensity to it's peak of brilliance and then begins to fade and slowly descend into darkness. The perfect compliment to the patio or terrace dining experience with someone special.

"Pioneer Living"

22" x 28" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Almost every day began and ended the same way for the pioneer family. When the rising sun moved across the fields and first touched the windows of the tiny cabin, it was time to start work. Everyone had their chores that collectively were essential to sustain the household. The fields must be prepared, planted and harvested. Livestock had to be tended. Wood supply must be maintained for energy. Goods like soap, candles, clothing, tools, furniture etc. are made by hand. Hunting and fishing are necessary to balance the food supply. Regular meals must be planned and prepared. Clothes and bedding are washed and so on and so on. Every day was very busy, but time was made for prayer, love and companionship. The day ended when the sun set in the western sky.

"A Soldier's Goodbye"

20" x 18" Original Oil on Gallery Wrapped  Canvas

This painting is something very different for me; a representation of a time and place in history that I have always had deep and personal feelings about, often wondering how I would have responded having faced the same challenges.

There was a special group of Americans, coined "The Greatest Generation" by Journalist Tom Brokaw in the year 1984. This generation grew up during the Great Depression and, as adults, experienced the sacrifices, tragedies, horrors and atrocities of World War II. They were asked to contribute and that is exactly what they did; on the battlefields and in support from home and around the world. They did so with courage, valor, enthusiasm and patriotism. When the war was won, the survivors united to shape America into the strongest nation on earth. My painting is, I am sure, a scene repeated many times over when a warrior had to leave a dear friend behind. It is simply my personal tribute to "The Greatest Generation".

"After the Storm"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Only a few lingering clouds and diminishing winds remain from the violent storm of the night before. As the sun makes it's first appearance the landscape begins to transform from total darkness into an embellishment of light and color made more brilliant by the freshly cleansed morning air. The still turbulent winds have left the unbridled tropical waters in a state of total disarray enhancing the effect of the sunlight as the waves crash over and around the jagged rocks.

"The Last Mile"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

When the American Civil War ended in 1865 and the armies of the Confederacy were disbanded., the battered, emotionally and physically wounded soldiers were left to find their way home as best as they could. More times than not, they had little or no money, and faced a daunting journey to be reunited with their loved ones in the place they wondered if they would ever see again. My painting is how I imagined what a soldier might see as he reaches the last mile of his trek and the excitement and anticipation builds as he wonders what he will find when he finally reaches his destination.

"Solitary Man"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

End of another day for the solitary man. A man of faith and stability who, contrary to human tendency, made the choice to live alone with nature. He has found contentment deep in the wilderness surrounded by the beauty of the land and all it's majesty. After an occasional trip to town for supplies and to visit with a few friends and relatives, he is always anxious to return to his undisturbed place on earth where he has everything he needs and desires to sustain his uncomplicated  lifestyle.

"Village Sanctuary"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

The model for the focal point of my painting was the beautiful five hundred years old Church in Ramsau, Berchtesgadener Land, Bavaria, Germany.  I changed the church slightly to blend with the theme of the landscape that is totally from my imagination. The little church is the last building on the main street of the town and serves not only as the place of worship but for the meeting hall of the people for all the town business. The church backs up to a large lake and small tributary streams surrounded by a forest of thick foliage bursting with all the colors of autumn magnified by the setting sun.

"Horizon Daybreak"

30" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

In a matter of minutes, the soft glow of the moon is replaced with an explosion of vivid color and light as the sun makes it's first appearance above the trees. The site is a favorite of the creatures of the wild because of an endless supply of life sustaining fresh water and an abundant food source.

"Close to Home"

24" x 30" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

I have traveled to far away places in search of ideas and inspiration for my paintings. For this one, I can jump in my car on any day and drive for about a half hour The atmosphere is a contrast of bright sunlight and shadows from the rapidly building dark clouds. The winds over the marshland are picking up with the approaching ominous storm. For the crane, only time for a quick snack as he senses the danger and takes off for safer grounds.

"Hidden Treasure"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Anyone traveling by boat down the river would most likely miss this charming spot in a secluded little cove just off the main body of water. The morning sun, well up in the sky, still cast a bid of haze over the background on the far riverbank, but clearly highlights the colors of Autumn just beginning to show in the changing leaves of the foreground trees. The waterfall continues it's perpetual task of carving out a recession in the rocks the way it has for a countless number of years further concealing it's existence.

"Backcountry"

30" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

In this remote, undeveloped, isolated region of nature, we are positioned where the downhill flow of the river ends and it is transformed into a stream that cascades its way deep into the dense forest and eventually disappears. The fading sun at dusk presents an interesting assortment of color, light and reflections that enhances the ambiance of this serene setting.

"Lazy River"

20" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

As the haze is slowly burned off by the bright, early morning sun, the vivid shades of color in the forest are revealed. The winding river makes it's way through the wilderness in all directions like a maze. So deep in nature, this scene and any scene in the area is completely unspoiled by human intervention; shaped only by the hand of the almighty and the wildlife meant to be there.

"Dance of Passion"

24" x 20" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas"

Dance of Passion" is one of my oldest pieces . This is the first time that it has been posted on any of my online galleries or displayed anywhere.  I did this painting when I was still uncertain about what kind of artist that I wanted to be.   When I started to lean toward landscape art, I sort of set the painting aside in my studio where it has remained for many years.  Recently, it caught my attention again and I remembered that several visitors to my studio had made positive comments about the painting.  So, I decided to give it a chance to shine. I think it is a representation of my appreciation of other art forms, e.g., The Performing Arts.

"Lake Enchantment"

18" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

While planning and working on this painting, I envisioned being on a nature trail, several hundred feet above the water level, that completely surrounds the lake. The trail would have been formed over many years by explorers, hikers, wildlife etc. and  just about anyone looking for a little adventure and excitement while enjoying the amazing views from anywhere along the trail.  The season is early spring, all of the plant life is beginning to show new color and there is a cool breeze from the mountains.  All working together to enhance the exhilarating experience.

"Over the River and Into the Valley"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Although the scene reminds me of so many places that I have visited, it is not from one of my travel photographs. This painting is completely from my imagination. One of those that sort of transformed as I worked into what you see now.  It is a bright, clear, cold day after a late autumn snowfall the night before and the air is fresh and clean.  I am on an old dirt road driving a horse drawn carriage, wagon or sleigh. I am with a small group of friends all bundled up to keep warm.  We are returning from a sightseeing ride through  the countryside.  Through the covered bridge and a mile or so into the valley we will reach my cabin where a warn fireplace and hot drinks await. After a while to warm up and reflect on all the interesting things and beautiful scenery that we saw on our ride, the charcoal grill beckons for a first class barbecue with all our favorite side dishes and drinks.

"Storm Warnings"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

This work, from my imagination, depicts a moment in nature rarely seen by a human eye because of it's seclusion and inaccessibility. Initially, the painting was just a mixture of rather bland shades of gray, blue, green and brown that covered the entire canvas.  As the painting progressed, first without much direction, the scene began to manifest. The spectacle was brought to life by carefully placed, detailed, shadows and highlights that magically transformed the image into what you now see.

"Alpine Sunrise"

24" x 30" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

A beautiful sunrise is renown for appearing quickly and vanishing just as quickly. Within that short window is a moment when the colors and intensity are at their pinnacle.  At that moment, the brilliant colors are absorbed and blended with the natural colors of the objects that are touched by the sun's rays and a miraculous transformation takes place. 'Alpine Sunrise' captures that precise moment where the colors, light and shadows are all at their peak. In a moment, the landscape will begin to change and another transformation will evolve.

"Tropic Wave"

18" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

A fleeting instant in time, captured by the Artist's brush strokes, destined to never be repeated again. It's uniqueness guaranteed by the ever-changing motion of every drop of seawater in sync with the atmospheric conditions that determine the amount and intensity of light and shades of color. Hopefully, a simple yet inspiring work of art.

"Wild Flowers"

24" x 18" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Many of the bright and refreshing colors of spring are represented in this array of early blooming flowers at the peak of development.

"Above the Gorge"

20" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

As the snow melts on the mountaintops, the many tributaries feeding the river at the bottom of the gorge come to life.  In this depiction, a plethora of color is displayed; the result of the late afternoon sunlight bouncing off the clouds, mountains, rocks and vegetation.  A pool is formed as the water reaches a point in it's decent before continuing through a narrow passage down the mountain and into the river.

"Sand and Sails"

18" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

This day finds a small group of close friends setting sail into the early morning sunrise. Their destination, a favorite remote island retreat for a day of "sun and fun". More so, a respite from the "hustle and bustle" of the business world. The day carefully planned and designed to rejuvenate mind and body.  The scene captures an assortment of brilliant colors that are embellished by a few lingering storm clouds from the night before, along with the sparkling sea water, white sands and sea oats.

"Autumn's Return"

18" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

As the rising sun begins to highlight the changing colors of the Fall Season, the sounds and feel of nature seem to be more vibrant than usual.  At this place and time, the main body of the river feeds a stream that continues for many miles into the forest. There is a nature trail along the bank of the stream formed over the years by the native wildlife and, to a lesser extent, by hikers enjoying the unspoiled wilderness characteristics that are the jewels of our planet.

"Western Sky Brilliance"

18" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

The bright, warm colors of the sunset are presented for only a moment as the sun rapidly descends toward the horizon. Those same colors are reflected dramatically in the water, on the beach and off the cliffs of the mountain range in the distance.  A frequent, yet ever changing site for those fortunate enough to be in a place of such natural beauty.

"Bluebird of Mandarin"

18" x 24" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

It's daybreak in this scenic community of Northeast Florida. The majestic Eastern Bluebird is comfortably perched on a branch above the Gardenias in the early stages of blooming and at the peak of their exquisite fragrance. The glow of the morning sun enhances the natural colors of the environment.

"Jaguar Ferocity"

24" x 36" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

As the bright morning sun rises in the Eastern sky, the mighty Jaguar makes his way to a familiar vantage point overlooking his territory deep in the wilderness.  He announces his presence with a loud roar that echoes through the canyon alerting all living creatures that he has, once again, established his rule and dominance and is ready to take on all challengers.

"Seafarer's Passion "

28" x 22" Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

With the crew rested and aboard, the ship moves with full sail set into the open sea.  The brilliant rays of the rising sun are reflected in the sky, the water, and the sails of the mighty ship. A lone mariner takes a moment to reflect on how much he had enjoyed his shore leave time with family and friends.  But truthfully, like always, after a few days the call of the sea begins to return and the urge continues and grows stronger with each passing day until he is once again where he belongs. Such is the life of the Seafarer.
